HCS Voices Open Rehearsal

Do you enjoy singing? If you do, come and join us for an open rehearsal with no obligation to join

No singing experience necessary, no audition, just the ability to make a noise and have a laugh

We'll be singing a mixture of songs including the Lion sleeps tonight, Evening rise, Sitting on the dock of the bay, Yorkshire medley and some African songs.

Please turn up or message us if you've got any queries. If this date doesn't work for you, our usual rehearsal evening is a Wednesday, 7pm, St Paul's Hall, you'd be welcome any evening.

HCS Voices Spring Concert 2024

Our forthcoming concert dedicates the second half to performing the seven songs of John Rutter's 'Feel The Spirit' suite.

"Feel the Spirit is a cycle of seven familiar spirituals expertly arranged by John Rutter for mezzo-soprano solo, mixed choir, and orchestra or chamber ensemble. Equally suitable for concert, school, or church use, the vivid and expressive arrangements can be performed individually, or as a complete cycle that showcases the rich heritage of the spiritual. The work brings new life to such well-loved titles as Steal away, I got a robe, and When the saints go marching in and has two accompaniment options: full orchestra or chamber ensemble".
The Huddersfield Choral Society's vocal coach and Mezzo Soprano, Joyce Tindsley, is our sololist as we are again led by the safe hands of Laura Bailie.

In the first half we will present some well known World Music, Folk and Musical Theatre pieces, with the odd surprise inclusion!   Our concert will be again be interpreted by Samantha Green English / BSL Interpreter RSLI

Huddersfield Choral Society

The final concert of the 2023 - 2024 season is on the 16th March in Huddersfield Town Hall.

One of the great choral masses, Mozart’s Requiem in D minor was his last work and was unfinished on his death in 1791. It was completed the following year by Franz Sussmayr, who may have been working from notes or scraps left by the composer.
Its power and beauty, which make it such an audience favourite, have also given rise to various legends around its composition; that it was commissioned by an ‘unknown, grey stranger’ and that Mozart was convinced that he was composing his own funeral mass.

'Let All Men Sing' is a community choir project encouraging men to sing, supported by Colne Valley Male Voice Choir. Led by Thom Meredith, and with the in demand Christopher Pulleyn as accompanist, those new to singing are in safe hands. Thom is the Musical Director of Colne Valley Male Voice Choir and the Principal of Kirklees Musica.

If such a group had existed back in 2009 my adventures would likely have trod a different path!

Kirklees Musica exists to provide lessons and music opportunities for individuals, schools and centres across Kirklees. I was a member of the Adult Guitar group but Musica and its predecessor, Kirklees Music School, has been with me throughout my adult life. My wife played violin in the Youth Orchesta, my children in the Wind and Jazz bands. As a singer the Musica Youth Orchestra led by Thom Meredith has underpinned many events that I have participated in.
HCS Voices, the Community Choir member of the Huddersfield Choral Society family of choirs, has been awarded National Lottery Community Funding.

Announcing the funding, HCS Voices said...

"This grant will enable Voices to purchase music that reflects our abilities and our interest in an eclectic range of pieces and syles. We will also obtain polo shirts and fleeces so we can share a joint identity without financial constraints. Voices wishes to reach across our diverse community, to enjoy, learn and improve musically, and to reduce social isolation, loneliness and anxiety. Over the next twelve months, a workshop, open rehearsal and free-to-attend concert are all being planned."
Kirklees Year of Music 2023 celebrated the rich and diverse musical heritage across the towns and villages of Kirklees. The music community came together with a programme of events that captured and promoted the width of the local musical activity.  2023 may be over but the music plays on: https://www.musicinkirklees.co.uk/en-UK
